Over the next two decades, China is likely to construct as many new buildings as Europe's total current stock. (Speech by Angel Gurría, OECD Secretary-General, 16th September 2008; sent in by Toby Procter)

Elvis Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, stopped Elvis from touring abroad, as he was an illegal immigrant and believed he would not be allowed back in to the US. (BBC online; sent in by Nigel Springhall)

23 per cent of Germans believe the US government was behind 9/11. The figures in Britain, France and Italy are 5, 8 and 15 per cent respectively. In Egypt, just 12 per cent blame the US, although 43 per cent point the finger at Israel. (worldpublicopinion.org) 哈,有趣。

Buckingham Palace was recently valued at £935m.

A pound of gold is worth $12,000. The following are all worth more than their weight in gold, in terms of price per pound: platinum ($20,679), $50 notes ($22,680), cocaine ($22,680), rhodium ($77,292), good-quality 1-carat diamonds ($11.4m), LSD ($55m) and antimatter ($26 quadrillion). (Marginal revolution, 28th August 2008) 嗯。 。。

One in four adults in New York City have herpes. (USA Today, 9th June 2008)

This year, over 5 per cent of the Egyptian government budget will go on bread subsidies. Subsidies as a whole cost more than the health and education budgets combined.

Word with numbers

  • In England, 57 per cent of children aged five to 12 have visited Spain and 54 per cent France. But only 44 per cent have visited Wales and 39 per cent Scotland. (Travelodge) 。。
  • China is now the world's sixth largest wine producer. (Slate, 8th August 2008)
  • Charlie Chaplin once entered a Charlie Chaplin lookalike contest— and failed to make the finals. (Snopes.com)
  • Catholics believe that the soul comes into existence at the exact moment of conception. In Greek Orthodoxy, "ensoulment" happens at 21 days, in Islam at 40 days, and in Judaism at 80 days. (Between the Monster and the Saint, by Richard Holloway)
  • 1p and 2p pieces made before 1992 are 97 per cent copper. Today's high price of copper ($8,185 a tonne) means they are worth around 3p. (Daily Telegraph, 11th July 2008)
  • The average participant in the New York City marathon has an annual household income of $130,000. (New Yorker, 11th/18th August 2008)
  • Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both have houses in Vilakazi Street in Soweto, making it the only address in the world to house two Nobel Peace prize winners.
  • In the US, 14.5 per cent of men are six feet or over. But among CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the figure is 58 per cent. (Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell)
  • With 800m players, beach volleyball is the second most popular sport in the world by participation, after football. (BBC1)
